Each year the New York Youth Symphony’s First Music program commissions seven new compositions from America’s best young emerging orchestra, chamber music, and jazz composers under age 30. First Music has been widely acknowledged as one of the leading forces in the United States for bringing the work of gifted young composers to the public’s attention. Commission awards range from $500 to $3,000 and include premieres at Carnegie Hall, Jazz at Lincoln Center, and Interlochen. The First Music Program is chaired by Chris Theofanidis and Rufus Reid.
