Composition Audition Overview

Thank you for your interest in being a part of the 2015/2016 New York Youth Symphony's Composition program.

Audition Dates

Interviews for the Composition program will be held September 9 - 10, 2016. Upon completing your online application and paying the application fee you will receive a link to the online sign up form to schedule your interview time. All interviews must be scheduled through the online calendar. Please do not phone the administrative office to schedule your audition. 

Before you Apply

The Composition program generally meets weekly from October to May on Thursdays between 4-7pm at various locations in NYC.

Age Eligibility:  In order to participate in a NYYS Program the applicant's birthdate must fall between November 20, 2004 and May 29, 1994, inclusive. Please do not apply if you are outside of these dates as you will not be eligible for the program and we are not able to refund your application fee.

Program Guidelines: Before applying to the program we encourage you to visit the Composition page for program details and review the Composition Program Guidelines* which outlines general requirements for participating in the Composition Program.

Please note: The Program Guidelines are from the 2013-2014 season.

Fees: The application fee for the 2015/2016 season is $80. In addition to the application fee, there is a $275 registration fee upon acceptance into the program. Limited work study subsidies are available. Please contact the administrative office if you are intersted in work study opportunities.

Kick-Off Weekend: Kick-Off Weekend will take place September 16-18, 2016 at Camp DeWolfe in Wading River, NY. Participation is a required for all compositions students and all students should plan on leaving Friday afternoon and returning Sunday early evening.

What to Expect at Your Interview

At your interview you will meet with the Director and/or Associate Director of the Composition program. The meeting is largely conversational and you are asked to bring a minimum of one recent composition (score and recording) that you will discuss. If you do not have a recording please just bring the score.
