MARKETING MANAGER (FULL-TIME):

The NYYS is seeking a Marketing Manager to join its full-time staff of five. Reporting to the Executive Director, the successful candidate will be a creative thinker with excellent communication and design skills, a self-initiating, professional temperament, and 3-5 years of experience in marketing and/or public relations. This position is responsible for creation and implementation of the marketing plan, including design of marketing pieces, social media accounts, ticketing, public relations, website, and the mobile app.

The New York Youth Symphony (NYYS) is one of the most awarded youth programs in the nation, recognized for its innovative, tuition-free educational programs for talented young musicians.  Founded in 1963 as an orchestra to showcase the metropolitan area’s most gifted musicians ages 12-22, its activities have since grown to encompass programs in chamber music, conducting, composition, and jazz, with performances at world class venues including Carnegie Hall and Jazz at Lincoln Center. Through its commissioning program, First Music, the NYYS has commissioned over 150 works from young composers since 1984.

Responsibilities:

  • Designs and implements marketing/advertising plan for the season
  • Designs and implements e-marketing strategies, including the mobile app, website, and social media accounts on Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat accounts
  • Oversees ticketing for all NYYS concerts, including direct sales of orchestra subscriptions and coordination with performance venues including Carnegie Hall, Jazz at Lincoln Center, and Symphony Space
  • Designs select printed marketing materials, including season brochure, newsletters, posters, postcards, etc.
  • Writes and distributes press releases to media outlets
  • Creates and markets advertising opportunities
  • Maintains and develops relationships with community partners
  • Hires and supervises intern(s)

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, business or arts management preferred
  • 3 or more years within non-profit or related positions
  • Excellent collaborative and leadership skills
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills
  • Experience and expertise with InDesign, Photoshop, and email marketing systems required
  • Experience with Salesforce preferred
  • Experience with social media tools/emerging media and media distribution/tracking databases
  • Preferred qualities: A creative thinker, team player, positive attitude, consumer oriented personality, highly organized with meticulous attention to detail
  • Knowledge of classical music and/or jazz is desirable, but not required

LIBRARIAN (part-time, seasonal)

Reporting to the Music Director and Director of Artistic Operations, the Orchestra Librarian is responsible for ordering and preparing all music performed during the concert season, maintaining all contents of the library, maintaining library records, and disseminating music to and collecting music from students.

POSITION DURATION: August 2017 — June 2018

MUSIC DUTIES:

  • Complete paperwork and obtain quotes for rental fees for parts/scores needed for the season and place rental orders once approved by Director of Artistic Operations and Music Director.
  • Coordinate and work with principal section leaders to determine and mark original master parts with bowings and other markings prepared by the Music Director.
  • Prepare & distribute practice and performance parts to students as required by the rehearsal schedule. Practice parts are distributed via printed copies and pdf versions uploaded to nyys.org or Dropbox.
  • Prepare scores for assistant conductor and orchestra manager. Secure scores for sectional coaches as needed
  • Address changes or issues with orchestral parts during each rehearsal cycle.
  • Transport music folders when required (concerts, Kickoff, masters coachings, rehearsals).
  • Return rental parts in good order the week following the final concert of the cycle to the rental company and/or to the New York Public Library.  Late fees incurred as a result of negligence on the Librarian’s part will result in a deduction (of an equal amount to late fees charged) of pay.
  • Catalogue new acquisitions and re-catalog orchestra music at end of the season in the music library  

CONCERTS: Concert attendance is required for all NYYS Orchestra performances (5 per season). Duties include:

  • Setting out music folders on stands at least 30 minutes prior to dress rehearsal.
  • Placing parts and scores during concert as necessary.
  • Collecting folders following concerts.
  • Transporting music to/from venue

GENERAL DUTIES:

  • Assist Orchestra Manager, senior office staff, and Music Director with all orchestral activities, including auditions, coachings, and Kickoff weekend (September 15-17, 2017).
  • Address library-related questions and concerns of the orchestra musicians.

 Note:  The librarian may enlist the volunteer service and support of orchestra musicians especially in the collection and distribution of parts.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • A minimum of two years’ experience as an orchestral librarian
  • Excellent communications skills
  • Attention to detail, budgets, and deadlines
